About the work
A Brasileira de Prazins follows Marta, a young woman in rural Minho whose love for José Dias is constrained by family debt, marriage bargaining and male authority. Their intimate tragedy is interwoven with a political farce about supporters of Dom Miguel and a counterfeit king, linking private coercion to public credulity and self-interest. An elderly narrator reconstructs the story from an unread letter and Father Osório's memories, then openly claims responsibility for his own irony. The medical and demonological explanations in the novel belong to competing nineteenth-century voices; this edition does not present them as modern diagnoses or supernatural fact.
