Reading and navigation
How to use Aprender Português
Start with a book and a reading band. Use English only when it helps, and adjust the page for comfortable, sustained reading.
Start reading
Open the Library, choose a title marked Available, then select one of its three reading bands. You can also use the author, genre and status filters to narrow the list.
Choose a band
Beginner A1-A2 uses shorter sentences and clearer links between ideas. Intermediate B1-B2 keeps more detail and texture. Advanced C1-C2 comes closer to the work's voice and complexity. You can switch bands from any chapter.
Change the site language
Use Português (PT) or English (EN) in the main navigation. This changes buttons, guidance and page information, not the Portuguese book text. In a book, the matching title, band and chapter stay open.
Use light or dark mode
Use the Light or Dark switch in the main navigation. Your choice is kept on this device and continues when you change language or page. Until you make a choice, the site follows your device preference.
Reveal one English sentence
Select a Portuguese sentence to reveal its English support.
Tap a Portuguese sentence to reveal its English support; tap it again or tap outside to close it.
With a keyboard, focus or activate a sentence. Press Escape to dismiss its English support.
The English support belongs to that Portuguese sentence and closes again when you dismiss it or open another one.
Show or hide all English
Choose Show all English to display every translation in the current chapter. Choose Hide all English to return to Portuguese-only reading.
Change text size and line spacing
Use A- and A+ for text size and the spacing menu for line spacing. The settings apply across chapters on this device.
Move between chapters
Open the chapter list near the top of the reader, or use the previous and next links at the end of a chapter.
Use the glossary and reading notes
The edition page includes a glossary and reading notes where they are useful. These explain selected words, expressions or context without interrupting every sentence.
Return to your place
As you read, the site stores your latest sentence position in this browser. Open the same book and band to continue. No account is needed.
Use a keyboard or touch screen
With a keyboard, move to a Portuguese sentence with Tab and use Enter or Space to open its English support; Escape closes revealed support. On a touch screen, tap a sentence to open it and tap elsewhere to close it. Touch instructions never require hovering.
Understand unavailable titles
Titles marked In preparation, Coming next or Future expansion are listed so you can see the shape of the collection. Their detail pages show their current status; only Available titles open in the reader.
Manage local preferences
Colour theme, text size, spacing and reading position stay in this browser. To remove them, use the button below. This does not affect the books or anything stored elsewhere.
Solve common problems
- If a translation will not open, reload the page and try the sentence again.
- If text or spacing feels uncomfortable, keep the browser zoom you need and adjust the reader's text size or line spacing.
- If your place was not saved, check whether private browsing or browser settings block local storage.
