Read Amor de Perdição

Amor de Perdição follows two young people from rival families in the early nineteenth century. The love between Simão Botelho and Teresa de Albuquerque confronts family pride, forced marriage, violence, convent confinement, prison and transportation. The narrative combines tragic passion, documents, family memory, irony and a critique of honour. Mariana, who loves Simão without being loved in return, is a central figure of care and sacrifice; the adaptation keeps that emotional boundary clear.

Literary and historical context
Published in 1862, the novel places most of its action between 1803 and 1807. Family honour, paternal authority, convent confinement, criminal justice and transportation belong to the institutions and values of the period, not to present-day models of relationships or justice.
The narrative voice is not a neutral chronicle. It combines documentary records, letters, family memory, direct address, irony and uncertainty. Chronological contradictions in the source are preserved as contradictions rather than silently repaired by invention.
The language of passion, death, religion and sacrifice belongs to the work's Romantic mode. The three bands simplify syntax and density to different degrees while preserving the same causality, relationships and complete ending.

- A senior royal magistrate with judicial and administrative authority in a district.
- Relação
- A superior court; in the narrative it can also refer to the prison associated with the Porto court.

- A raised lookout or viewing place, here at the Monchique convent.
- nau
- A large sailing ship used for long voyages.
- avental
- An apron worn over clothing; Mariana's apron becomes an important object in the ending.
- amurada
- The raised side or bulwark of a vessel.
- cordame
- The ropes and rigging of a ship.
